Systems R&D Engineer | National Instruments | Bengaluru, KA

Job description:

National Instruments is conducting an interview for the post of Systems R&D Engineer.

About the group:

The NI (National Instruments) Semiconductor & Electronics Business Unit (SEBU) Systems R&D group has an immediate opening for a Systems R&D Engineer

This group works on a wide variety of projects from creating system-level hardware and software components for systems like the Semiconductor Test System (STS) or Wafer Level Reliability (WLR) to creating system reference architectures for applications such as 5G mm-Wave Over-The-Air Front-End Module Characterization or Semiconductor Device Control.

In addition to system design and development, our group is also responsible for the exploration of new and emerging application areas to help in the definition of future offerings, while collaborating with Sales, Offering Management, and Manufacturing.

This position will focus primarily on mixed-signal validation test application architectures for large scale parallel SMU (Source measure Unit) test systems, mixed-signal IC power validation and LCR device-level measurements. Defining validation procedures for common mixed-signal blocks such as data converters (ADC/DAC), voltage regulators (LDOs and Switchers), microcontrollers (MCU) and interface protocols.

In this role, you will perform research, design, implement and test software and systems for NI Mixed Signal Test solutions, used to characterize and validate performance of wafer or integrated circuit (IC) devices.

Job duties and responsibilities:

  • Perform research as required to develop or enhance NI products and/or systems.
  • Design, implement, and test software or Hardware features for new and existing products and/or systems.
  • Diagnose and debug problems with the products or problems arising when the product integrates with other NI and/or customer’s products.
  • Work with a wide variety of NI Employees in R&D software and hardware organizations over the world to solve technical problems
  • Use standard lab equipment as required for measurement and characterization and ability to create fixturing necessary to interface instruments to the DUT in cost-effective ways
  • Work with senior engineers to define physical/electrical aspects of reference designs using NI HW and DUTs (Analog, Mixed Signal, MCU) and intricacies of measurements like using NI instruments to measure or characterize parameters (For e.g., CMRR, PSRR, Transient Response etc) and understand measurement errors.
  • Work towards attaining domain and subject matter expertise by
  • Researching industry best practices, customer needs, and competitor capabilities
  • Authoring paper studies to inform feature definition and drive project decisions
  • Creating Proof of Concepts (POCs) to demonstrate product capability
  • Creating system architectures by integrating NI instruments with additional designed
  • Circuit Card Assemblies (CCAs) that complete the system-level offering
  • Deriving system specifications to satisfy application requirements
  • Drive excellence in proficiency and the use of application systems both internally and externally
  • Enable operational excellence in quality and efficiency of system design, build and delivery

Qualifications and Skills required:

  • Bachelors (4 years) or master’s in electrical engineering, Electronics, Microelectronics, VLSI Design, Physics, or Computer Science
  • 0-2 years of Industry experience in system design focused on DC, power, audio, MEMS or digital semiconductors, Device validation and Characterization preferred. [JV1] [AP2]
  • Solid understanding of passive component (resistor, capacitor, inductor) characteristics.
  • Knowledge of electronic circuit design using signal chain building blocks like Op-Amps, ADCs (Analog to Digital Converter) & DACs (Digital to Analog Converter), and discrete semiconductors (BJT, MOSFET, Diodes)
  • Knowledge of microcontroller architectures (any one of ARM, AVR, MSP430, 8051 and its variants)
  • Hands-on Programming experience in C++/ C#/ LabVIEW/Python.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Team-oriented and capable of influencing without authority across many functional areas
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, changing, and challenging environment
  • Excellent Problem-solving skills, with a track record of taking initiatives
  • Preferred: Working knowledge of Test and Measurement equipment like Multimeter, Oscilloscope, Signal generator etc.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of hardware design flow (Circuit simulation, Schematic capture, Layout)
  • Preferred: Working knowledge of Power supply design, battery management, ADCs, Memories, buffers, drivers, amplifiers, Microcontroller design and different hardware protocols (UART, I2C, SPI etc)
  • Travel up to 20%, including international trips.
